“Think about every problem, every challenge, we face. The solution to each starts with education.”
George H.W. Bush
We live in a strange world. We are blinded by so much privilege compared to what is existent in the rest of the world that we don’t even realize that there are basic functions in our own country that are not guaranteed rights. It is high time that education be recognized not only as a responsibility of the states, but also affirmed as a right of a US Citizen. Our Kids have a right to a basic education, a right that is not even properly granted by the constitution. Our education system is broke, and failing our children; here would be the basis of my proposal:
- Education becomes a guaranteed right as an addendum to the constitution.
- This right is secured by states. States will fund their own education departments and form their own curriculums under a basic guide provided by a stripped down federal department of education.
- The Department of Education will provide a yearly analysis and broad suggestions for the coming year so that states can be better equipped to determine their success in providing basic education.
- There will cease to be large taxes from the federal level for education. It is up to the states to provide education and as such pay for the education. With a paired down education department, less money will be required to function.
- The federal government will provide a basic education packet based on the yearly analysis and suggestions that states may use as their curriculum and that will be available for free to those who wish to use it as homeschool curriculum.
